On March 10th, the US Department of Commerce convened leaders from the robotics, artificial intelligence, manufacturing, and investment communities for a roundtable to discuss how the United States can build and scale more Physical AI-enabled robotics technologies. The wide-ranging discussion included strengthening domestic robotics supply chains, using AI and robotics to advance manufacturing, the talent pipelines needed to support robotics scale-up and the digital infrastructure required for advanced robotics systems. My takeaways from the discussion are that the industry agrees on the need for a national robotics strategy and standards, especially in safety and data management/cybersecurity. Also the government can help champion the use of robotics and act as an early adopter.
On the same day the Council on Foreign Relations held an in-person roundtable on Securing American Leadership in Robotics. This group of government officials and industry representatives discussed promotions and policy changes that could help the industry. We had the opportunity to highlight some of the robots our start-ups and companies in our ecosystem are building, as well as the challenges they face in both manufacturing their products and from foreign competition.
